    • Do You Make These Particular Mistakes When Trying To Follow A Healthy Diet Plan?

      July 12, 2011

I make mistakes all the time – in my healthy diet plan and other areas of my life. One time when I was making a white bean dip, I thought I’d try a bit of mustard powder. I accidentally dumped in a huge amount.

Rather than scooping it out, I figured it wouldn’t be that bad and just mixed it in. I was wrong. Even with another can of beans added to the mix, that mustard was not going to be muted.

When it comes to a healthy diet plan, there are lots of mistakes that you can make. The key is to learn from them and keep moving forward. Being aware of some of the common mistakes that other people have made can help you avoid making them in first place.

Mistake #1 – Overdosing on Treats

Our tastebuds – and our brains – are programmed to like sugar. It is, after all, our body’s prime source of energy. Not everyone has a sweet tooth, but we all have a carb tooth. BBQ potato chips have a lot of simple carbs under the layer of salt, flavoring and fat.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m trying to stick to a super healthy diet plan, I sometimes want to treat myself for being so good. Or I want to finish off a meal with just a little something sweet. You deserve it, right?

Treating yourself with occasional sweets is absolutely fine, but the negative side to this is that when you start to treat yourself with a chocolate bar, a cookie or even with a bag BBQ chips, it might be hard to prevent yourself from eating the whole thing.

Refined sugars, salt and fats are all addictive (not to mention the caffeine in chocolate), as a result, even if you only plan to have a little bit, you can finish the bag of cookies or chips in no time.

      Mistake #2 – Demonizing Fat

A healthy diet plan used to mean eating little or no fat at all. Fortunately, we’ve learned that’s absurd, but the fear of fatty foods still lingers in the back of our minds. Especially after the discovery of the bad effects of hydrogenated fats in our body, which are found in many foods.

I wouldn’t go that far as to describe hydrogenated or highly refined fats as the demon itself, but they absolutely have no benefits and can create a lot of harm – especially if you regularly eat them for longer periods of time.

A simple trick to this is getting the fats you need for your healthy diet plan from healthy and whole foods like avocados, grains, nuts, seeds and beans. Fats from those sources will ensure that you’re getting high-quality, fresh fats and other nutrients. Whole foods’ fat can also help you avoid eating too much unhealthy fat from other sources.

And also, fats from whole foods have lesser calories compared to oils and processed foods. This way, you can still eat lots of fat, but not like you potato chip-guzzling counterparts.

Mistake #3 – Nutrition as Religion

The basics of a healthy diet plan are pretty simple – eat a bunch of whole, unprocessed plant foods. Avoid refined and processed foods. Oh yeah, and drink plenty of water.

Once you switch to that type of healthy eating plan, you’ll begin to feel much better than you did following a Crappy Standard American Diet. And still, from that foundation of healthy eating, you can still do more.

There are people who already figured out how eat better, and often times, they feel like sharing what they’ve learned with everybody. The trouble with this is that they often believe that everyone else requires the same food and nutrition they needed to achieve an excellent health.

Each person is different – not only in culture and taste, but in actual structural and biochemical ways. We have different ways in processing foods, we absorb them at different level, and we also have unique needs for a couple of foods and nutrients.

To find your own optimal health, don’t get caught up following someone else’s path – especially when they tell you that you have to follow it strictly or else you’ll wind up in nutritional hell.

Their ways might be beneficial to you, but then again it can also be the contrary of what you really need. And worse, it might just a part of some marketing stunt to sell you some nutritional supplements or books.

It can be quite tough to come up with your very own healthy diet plan. For a long time now, I’ve been working on mine and I feel quite splendid, but I also understand that as my body and my knowledge changes, I’ll continue learning for the rest of my life.

The important thing is to get started and not be afraid to change things as you go and as you learn.
